Tracking & Tracing

Case study about pharma item-tracking for Knapp Logistics
7iD now EB has developed an RFID solution for automated pharma industry allowing picking and charge numbers to be consistently documented and tracked. The technical challenge faced is that different pharmaceuticals are stored in one container at random (bulk reading), the transponders are able to overlap each other and monitor products without interval. Metal foil blister packs normally cause shielding and detuning of RFID antennas but in operation the 7iD solution achieves a reading rate of 99.99% while maintaining a conveyor belt speed of 0.5m/s. This RFID application is an important factor of a global e-Pedigree-Solution.

Objectives
Implementation of an RFID anti counterfeiting solution for high value goods
Automated tracking systems for the optimization of product / batch recalls

The Challenge
Bulk-Reading: multiple drugs can be read simultaneously without requiring direct line of sight and regardless of orientation;
Blister packs (of metal) and serums may cause detuning of RFID antennas
Nevertheless, the reading rate shall be at least 99,98 %
Solution Approach
EPCglobal compliant HF-technology
60x30mm smart labels
Magellan tunnel and desktop-reader
Integration into the conveyor belt
Gapless documentation of batches

Test Setup
200 Items, in random orientation
Conveyor belt speed: 0,5 m/sec. 40.000 test runs
Reading rate: 99,99966%
