BHDT is a supplier and manufacturer of high pressure equipment and high pressure components for the chemical and petrochemical industry. Within their production location in Austria, orders run through several manufacturing steps including sawing of raw steel pipes, drilling, milling, painting and assembling to finished high pressure product. As some production steps take longer than others, forklifts carry the half-finished high pressure components to temporary storing spaces until the next machine is ready to process them. Knowing the state of the orders and where to find them is crucial to the production throughput and can cost a lot of time, especially when goods are stored chaotically and their locations are not known.
To increase order transparency and minimize look-up time, 7iD Technologies installed an innovative material tracking solution consisting of 600 RFID tagged pallets, 600 RFID floor tags, 5 RFID gates with direction detection, 3 RFID tagged forklifts with RFID antennas on the bottom and on the fork as well as individually, tailor-made business software to integrate the material tracking solution in the current ERP system. Heart of the solution are forklifts and floor zones equipped with RFID tags in a distance of a half meter. If a forklift picks up a palette after a production step has been finished, the front antenna identifies the carried order and stores that information. During the worker drives the half-finished products to another machine or an available space, either the RFID gates detect the side tag on the vehicle, or the bottom RFID antennas of the forklift identify RFID tags on the floor and match this second information with the carried order.
